If you have an Atheros device that does not work with madwifi, you will want to install the linux-backports -modules- intrepid- generic package, which includes an updated version of the ath5k driver. IMHO, we should be able to put the driver in a seperate package and use restricted-manager to pick the proper driver, but I’m not aware enough of how the internals work to know if we can fix it. I think ath5k is blacklisted in Intrepid so as not to interfere with the venerable madwifi which does not support atheros with the hal ubuntu shipped. The a5007 33 worked for my HP dv5 laptop.
